The first step you must take before creating your very own GPT is to decide on which name you would like to have for it. Make sure it's catchy, easily spelled, and most importantly, available. Some people are under the impression that if you check one domain registration site for a name, and its unavailable, it may be free in another place. Unfortunately, that's not true. If, for example, you wish to register YeOldeRandomSite.com, you'd find very quickly that there is already a site for it. Checking elsewhere will not help. What you CAN do however, is choose an alternate ending for your domain, like .net or .org for example.

A highly recommended website for purchasing domains is GoDaddy. GoDaddy is one of the cheaper services, and is literally the #1 service for domain registration. I'm not trying to sound like an advertisement here, but they really are the best. There are other companies though that I recommend, and they do run sales sometimes that beat out even GoDaddy's low prices.

After you've made your choice, decide whether you want WHOIS privacy or not. WHOIS is basically a list of your contact information so that people can get ahold of you if need be...whether it be for a sale or a question about your website. All domain registration companies offer the ability to cloak this information under a private registration, but it normally is an extra charge. Furthermore, you may find that many members will feel safer and more trusting in your site if they know that they have a way to get ahold of you. But, the choice is yours in the end.
